Gola was first established in the Uk in 1905, most people agree that the name was originally derived form an anagram of the word 'goal', but no one at the firm can confirm this one hundred percent!
The Gola Trainers firm has had many years of ups and downs and the brand itself has been under three distinct owners throughout the years. In the early years Gola used to make shoes but fast moved in to the sports store and found a niche development Gola Classics football boots. This foray lead to them developing potential leather boots for the 1930 world cup!, with the motto Gola means golas. This was the time when a football boot was just that, a high laced brown leather boot!
During the early 1940's when the war was on Gola Classics Shoe installation had to make utility boots to help those engaged in war. Out went the footie boots and in came soldiery boots carrying the utility symbol. The Gola Classics firm made really thousands and thousands of pairs of these boots right up until the end of the 1940's.
The Gola Trainers firm the returned to its focus on development Rugby and Football boots right through the 1950's. really it was this continued focus on improvement that lead to the first light weight boots coming on to the store in the early 1960's.
Gola had a truly fabulous marketing plan that by modern standards is still pretty impressive. The firm had the unique idea of sponsoring the Physiologists (Physio) at pro football games. Seems odd right?, well not really!, every physio carried a bag, a plain sports bag with a big space on the side, which of course was excellent for carrying the spellbinding and distinctive Gola Trainers logo! This became very illustrated on the telly while football matches in the late 1960's.
Gola Classics made football boots for many of the league group one teams around at the time, this included the powerful Liverpool under the leadership of Bill Shankley's. The whole team really went to the installation in 1966 when they were on the was to the final of the Fa cup that year! Legend has it that he team had really signed up to wear German firm Adidas's football boots for the game but the team started the match with Gola Classics boots on which they had 'customised' with the addition of a few white stripes!
During the late 1960's the football boot became lighter and lighter and Gola Trainers were top of the tree!
1968 saw the new Gola Classics Harrier 'Trainer' being developed, it soon became the shoe of choice for the burgeoning generation of denim wearers. It was Gola who first coined the word 'Trainer' and it duly entered the dictionary in 1977.
After a difficult time in the late 70's and early 80's the brand was bought by a firm called William Lamb who started to turn it in to a lifestyle brand catering for the masses who wanted cheap trainers. They made cheaper children's shoes and sold to all the big retailers of the time. Competition was fierce and after battling it out for many years the firm sold the brand on to a firm called Jacobsons.
Forward to the mid 1990s Gola reintroduced its Classics range under the new owners while a time when there was a huge appetite for all things 'retro', that's before the word got used to death! The relaunched ranges were worn by the fashionistas of the day including Noel Gallagher, the lead guitarist and songwriter in Oasis. The Gola classics line was added to in 2000 when the brand released a huge colour palette of its now iconic trainer.
In 2005 Gola Trainers paramount 100 years development shoes and and the range got bigger and more diverse with innovative advertising hammering the message home. 2008 saw the 40th anniversary of the Gola superior Harrier shoe, which was again marketed in a huge array of colours. It has now been made in more than 200 colour combinations.
In 2009 Gola Trainers continued on, Innovating and developing with a new collaboration with Cristian Lacroix developing the eBoy - basketball boot. They also developed a great range of Womens Gola Trainers as well.
Today Gola Trainers march on with fresh new designs and tasty advertising to go with it - Gola Trainers Shoes, Classics with a twist!
